Leaks in old roofs are a common problem requiring a prompt solution. Today we are sharing our experience with the effective repair of the roof of the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God in Volgograd.
Object: The 30-year-old metal roof of the Church of the Kazan Icon of the Mother of God. The church was built in 1894–1899. It belongs to the Zatsaritsynsky deanery of the Volgograd diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church. During the Battle of Stalingrad, the church building was severely damaged but was later restored by the city's residents. From 1991 to 2021, it served as the diocese's cathedral. Leaks were recorded in the refectory, the prosphora bakery, and the laundry room. The roof's metal, with the exception of a few local spots, was in good condition, which made it possible to avoid a complete replacement.
Solution: A combination of "Bronya" materials was chosen for comprehensive waterproofing and protection. First, to ensure ideal adhesion and reinforcement, the surface was primed with "Bronya Prism" composition reinforced with fiberglass mat. Then, the high-performance waterproofing material "Bronya AquaBlock Expert" was applied. "Bronya" materials are characterized by high adhesion and elasticity, withstanding the temperature extremes typical of Volgograd's sharply continental climate, from -33°C (in winter) to +45°C (in summer), while also accounting for the high humidity of the city's air.
Work Stages:
• Thorough cleaning and preparation of the problem areas were performed.
• "Bronya Prism" primer with fiberglass mat was applied.
• The first layer of "Bronya AquaBlock Expert" was applied.
• The final, second layer of "Bronya AquaBlock Expert" was applied.
Result: After the application was completed, the roof passed a serious test: Volgograd experienced three powerful downpours, each delivering a month's worth of rainfall. All rooms remained completely dry! The leaks were completely eliminated, and a seamless, elastic, and durable waterproofing membrane was created. The material performed perfectly, as usual, confirming its reliability even under extreme conditions.
